Arlon is the capital of Belgium's Luxembourg province, in the far south-east of the country near the Grand Duchy's border. On the map, its oldest streets curl around a central hill, with lanes circling the summit and later districts spreading outward along the roads to Luxembourg, Bastogne and the French border.
That rounded, almost concentric centre gives an Arlon map poster its distinctive shape. Around it, rail lines, ring roads and residential streets form a looser pattern, eventually thinning into the forest and farmland of the Ardennes edge and the Gaume. The result is a compact town with a clearly legible heart.
Arlon is often described as one of the oldest towns in Belgium. It grew from the Roman settlement of Orolaunum on a road between Reims and Trier, and fragments of Roman walls and a museum of Gallo-Roman sculpture still recall that origin.
