Aru lies in Ituri Province in the far northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the borders with Uganda and South Sudan. Its position makes it a trading town, with goods and people moving along the roads that cross the frontier. The surrounding land is green and gently hilly, farmed in small plots.
From above, Aru is a town centred on a few main roads, with markets and commercial streets where they meet. Residential areas spread outwards in a looser pattern of compounds and gardens, and the houses thin quickly into farmland. The road network is sparse but clear, with routes leading towards the border and to other towns in Ituri.
