Ashton-in-Makerfield lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, and belongs to historic Lancashire. On the map the town is shaped by its main road, which runs north–south through the centre, with terraced streets and later housing estates spreading out on either side. Open green land and former colliery sites fill the gaps between it and neighbouring towns.
Coal mining shaped the area for generations, and the older terraces reflect that industrial past. To the south lies Haydock Park racecourse, whose large oval track is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map, and the M6 motorway passes nearby, a major route between the Midlands and the north.
