Autazes lies in the state of Amazonas, south-east of Manaus, in the lowland region near the Madeira River. The town sits on the bank of a waterway, and from above the settled area is small compared with the landscape around it: a grid of streets pressed against the water, with lakes, winding channels and floodplain meadows spreading in every direction.
The municipality is known in Amazonas for cattle and water buffalo ranching and for its dairy production, including cheese made from buffalo milk. All of this follows the seasonal rhythm of the rivers. During the high-water months much of the land floods, and transport, grazing and daily life adjust to the changing level of the water.
An Autazes map poster shows the contrast between the regular blocks of the town and the free, meandering forms of the Amazon waterways. Oxbow lakes, side channels and river bends fill the frame with sweeping curves, and the few roads leading out look slight beside them. The water, more than the streets, gives this map its character.
