Baarn lies in the province of Utrecht, on the edge of the sandy, wooded ridge that runs through the middle of the Netherlands. Much of the town is residential, with curved villa streets that date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when wealthy Amsterdammers built country homes here after the railway arrived.
Baarn is best known for Soestdijk Palace on its southern edge, for decades the home of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard. Large areas of woodland, including the Baarnse Bos, surround the town, and the Eem river flows along its northern side toward the IJsselmeer. Two railway stations connect Baarn with Amsterdam and Amersfoort.
