Babamba lies in Tshopo province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, only a short distance north of the equator. This is the country of the central Congo basin, where forest covers most of the land and settlements are linked by a thin network of roads and tracks. From above, the town appears as an open patch of streets and compounds within that wider landscape.
On paper, a place like this becomes a study in contrast between the built and the unbuilt. The street pattern is informal rather than gridded, with lanes branching from the main routes and fading out toward the surrounding land.
