Bacabal sits in the interior of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, on the banks of the Mearim River. From above, the river winds through a flat, largely rural landscape, and the town spreads out beside it in a loose grid of blocks. Highways converge here, and at the edges of the built-up area the streets thin out quickly into farmland and scrub.
It is one of the main towns of the Mearim valley and a commercial centre for the surrounding countryside. The river has shaped where the town could grow, and its bends are the most expressive lines on the map, set against the straighter geometry of the streets beside them.
