Bahlā’ lies in the interior of Oman, in Ad Dakhiliyah, at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. It is an oasis town, and its map is organised around water and defence. Palm groves irrigated by falaj channels cover a large part of the area, and the old town and farmland are enclosed by a long mud-brick wall that stretches for kilometres.
Bahla Fort, one of the largest in Oman, dominates the old town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is also known for its pottery. The falaj system of channels that distribute water to the gardens is another part of the heritage of the region.
A Bahlā’ map poster shows an unusual structure. There is no simple grid.
