Bājil lies on the Tihama, the hot coastal plain that runs along Yemen's Red Sea shore, inland from the port city of Al Hudaydah. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and on a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets and compounds set among farmland and dry ground. To the east, the plain gives way to the foothills of the western highlands.
The main road inland from Al Hudaydah passes through Bājil, and much of the town's layout follows this route, with commercial streets along it and residential quarters spreading out on either side. Beyond the edges, tracks and field boundaries radiate across the plain, and seasonal watercourses from the highlands leave faint, winding marks through the surrounding land.
Bājil is a market and administrative centre for its district, and it has long been associated with a large cement factory on its outskirts.
