Barcelos lies on the Rio Negro in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, far upriver from Manaus. The town is a narrow strip of streets running parallel to the riverbank, with the forest close behind it. On a map the river dominates everything. It is a vast dark band that makes the settlement look like a thin line drawn along its shore.
Near the town the Rio Negro spreads out into the Mariuá archipelago, often counted among the largest river archipelagos in the world, a maze of islands and channels. Seen from above, the islands break the water into long fragments, and the composition becomes as much about the pattern of the river as about the town.
Barcelos was the first capital of the colonial captaincy that later became the state of Amazonas. Today it is known for ornamental fish such as the cardinal tetra and for sport fishing. A Barcelos map poster shows this setting with restraint: a few streets, a long waterfront and an immense river.
