From above, the town is a compact settlement of straight streets and walled plots, with a ring of orchards and fields that depend on careful irrigation in a dry climate.

Within the irrigated zone, fields form small, regular parcels crossed by tracks; beyond it, the plain opens out with only a few roads heading toward neighbouring towns such as Kashmar.
