Barysaw lies on the Berezina River north-east of Minsk. The river is the central feature of the map. Its broad, winding course with oxbows and wetlands separates parts of the town, and the bridges and embankments show where road and rail make the crossing.
The Berezina has a well-known place in European history. In 1812, during the retreat from Moscow, Napoleon's army crossed the river near Barysaw under heavy losses. The word Berezina came to mean disaster in French, and memorials to the crossing stand in the area.
A Barysaw map poster shows the older streets close to the river alongside the regular blocks of the Soviet-era residential districts. Railway lines and forest border the town, and meadows and bends of the floodplain soften the edges of the composition.
