Berestyn Map Poster
Berestyn is a town in Kharkiv Oblast, southwest of Kharkiv. Until 2024 it was known as Krasnohrad. Its new name comes from the Berestova river, which flows past the town. On a map the town sits in open steppe farmland, and the river valley is the main natural feature for miles around.
The town began in the eighteenth century as a fortress on the Ukrainian Line, a chain of defensive works across the steppe. It later grew into a market and district centre. Today the plan shows a fairly regular street layout on the higher ground, with lower districts along the river and roads leading out across the fields.
