Bida lies on the open savanna plains of Niger State in central Nigeria, in a region of broad farmland, scattered woodland and seasonal streams. From above, the town shows a layout shared by many old northern Nigerian centres: a dense traditional core of compounds and winding lanes, with straighter roads and newer neighbourhoods laid out around it.
Bida is the seat of the Etsu Nupe, the traditional ruler of the Nupe people, and has long been one of the main centres of Nupe culture. The town is especially known for its crafts, above all its brass work and glass beads, produced by guilds of artisans whose skills have been passed down through families for generations.

The irregular lanes of the older quarters contrast with the straighter roads of later growth, and the whole settlement fades gradually into farmland at its edges.
