Biruaca is a town in Apure state in the Venezuelan llanos, the vast tropical grasslands of the Orinoco basin. It lies right next to San Fernando de Apure, the state capital, and on the map the two form one connected urban area. Biruaca's streets reach out across the flat plain, arranged in a largely regular pattern of blocks.
The llanos are an extremely flat landscape, flooded in the rainy season and dry for the rest of the year, and roads here tend to run long and straight across open savanna. Cattle ranching has long shaped the region's economy and culture, including the llanero music and traditions for which Apure is known throughout Venezuela.
