Bizerte lies on the northern coast of Tunisia, close to the northernmost point of the African continent. The city is built on both sides of a canal that connects Lake Bizerte to the Mediterranean, and the map is organised around that cut: the open sea to the north and east, the wide lake to the south, and the city on either side of the channel.
The old port, lined with houses and overlooked by a kasbah, is one of the most recognisable harbour scenes in the country, and the medina around it keeps a tight, irregular street pattern. Bizerte was a French naval base until 1963, two years after a violent standoff known as the Bizerte crisis, and naval installations still shape its waterfront.

The large lagoon to the south fills much of a wide frame, its shoreline curving away toward Menzel Bourguiba and the surrounding farmland.
