Bludenz sits in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg, at a point where several valleys meet: the Walgau, Klostertal, Montafon, Brandnertal and Großes Walsertal all converge nearby. The town occupies the valley floor, with steep, forested slopes rising on both sides. On a map, the built-up area is squeezed into a long, narrow band, while the mountains around it stay nearly empty.
The historic old town, with its arcades and old gate tower, sits at the heart of this band. Newer districts spread along the Ill River and the main roads. The Arlberg railway passes through on its way toward Innsbruck and adds a long, gently curving line. Bludenz is also known for its chocolate factory, where Milka has been produced for many decades.

Ill and railway
The Ill River and the Arlberg railway run through the valley floor side by side. Their parallel curves cross the whole composition and connect the town to the rest of Vorarlberg.
