Bodrum sits on the southern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula in southwestern Turkey, facing the Aegean. Its map is shaped by the coastline. Two curved bays meet at a small rocky point, and the town climbs the hills behind them in narrow, winding streets. Low white houses and garden walls fill the slopes, and the dense streets thin out toward the ridges.
On the point between the two bays stands the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the fifteenth century. It now houses a museum of underwater archaeology. One bay holds a large marina, and the other is lined with beaches and a waterfront promenade. From above, the castle and harbour form the clear centre of the composition.
Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus. It was the birthplace of the historian Herodotus and the site of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A Bodrum map poster brings together the curving coast, the castle headland and the terraced streets rising from the sea.
