Borba lies on the Madeira River in Brazil's Amazonas state, and on a map the river is by far the largest feature. The broad channel, its sandbanks and side waters take up much of the frame, and the town's short street grid sits on the bank above it. Past the last streets, the map opens into forest and seasonal floodplain.
Borba ranks among the oldest towns in the state of Amazonas, with its origins in an eighteenth-century mission settlement on the Madeira. For most of its history the river has been its main link to the rest of Brazil, and the waterfront is where the town meets that route. The layout is simple and compact.
