Bou Ismaïl lies on the Mediterranean coast of Tipaza Province, west of Algiers, on the wide bay that carries its name. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of streets set back from the sea, with a coast road running along its edge and the harbour forming a compact, hooked shape at the waterline. Behind the town, farmland stretches across the coastal plain.
During the French colonial period the town was called Castiglione, and its planned street layout dates from that time. Today it is known for its fishing port and for beaches that draw summer visitors from the capital region. The town has grown beyond its original grid, and newer housing extends inland and along the coast in both directions.
