Brava is the smallest inhabited island of Cabo Verde, in the southwest of the archipelago just west of Fogo. It is often called the Island of Flowers, for the gardens and greenery that grow on its cooler, higher ground. On a map it forms a compact, nearly round shape. It rises steeply from the sea to a central plateau and a series of peaks.
Nova Sintra, the main town, sits in the uplands above the coast, a small grid of streets with a central square. A winding road runs down from there to the harbour at Furna, which lies in an old volcanic crater on the northeastern shore. Boats from Fogo arrive there. Other roads loop through the interior to villages on the slopes, following ridges and valleys.
Brava has a long history of emigration, especially to New England. Many families there trace their roots to the island through the whaling ships that called at Brava in the nineteenth century. Roads switch back down from the plateau to the coast and out to hillside villages. Their curves follow the island’s steep ridges and valleys.
