Buftea is a town in Ilfov county, just north-west of Bucharest, on the Colentina river. Here the Colentina widens into a lake, and on the map this long shape of water lies across the town. The streets spread out on either side of it, in a mix of older rural roads and newer residential blocks.
The town has two well-known landmarks. The Știrbey Palace stands in a large park beside the lake. It was the estate of a noble family and forms a broad green area on the map. Buftea is also home to large film studios, established in the communist era and still used for film and television production.
