Butha-Buthe is the capital of the district of the same name in the far north of Lesotho. It lies in the lowland strip near the Caledon valley and the South African border, with the Maloti Mountains rising to the east. On a map, the town is a modest cluster of streets along the main road, with ridges and open ground all around it.
The streets form a loose network rather than a strict grid. There is a small central area with commercial buildings and government offices, and neighbourhoods spread across the gentle slopes around it. Beyond them, cultivated fields, dry river courses and bare hills take over. A Butha-Buthe map poster shows how small the town is compared with the vast landscape around it.
The name is often translated as a place of lying down. The area is linked to Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation, who had an early stronghold on a mountain near here before moving to Thaba Bosiu. That history gives this border town a special place in the story of Lesotho.
