Caetité stands in the highlands of south-central Bahia, among the ridges that form part of the Serra Geral and the wider Espinhaço system. The elevation gives it a milder climate than the surrounding sertão. The town has a long history as a regional centre of education and administration, and it is the birthplace of the educator Anísio Teixeira.
The historic centre forms a compact grid of streets and squares, typical of older Brazilian interior towns, with churches and civic buildings at key points. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward over the uneven ground, and roads leave the town towards the hills. The municipality is also known for uranium mining in the Lagoa Real area.
