Campoalegre is in the Huila department of southern Colombia, south of Neiva in the upper Magdalena valley. The town sits on the valley floor, with the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera rising to the east. On a map, flat, open farmland meets the start of the mountains, giving a clear sense of the terrain.
Rice is the main crop of the area, and the fields around the town appear as large, regular plots divided by irrigation channels. This geometric pattern covers much of the land around Campoalegre and sets off the town's orderly grid, which is organised around a central park in the traditional Colombian way.
