Câmpulung Moldovenesc lies in the Bukovina region of north-eastern Romania, in a valley of the Eastern Carpathians. The Moldova river flows through it, and the terrain forces the town into a long, narrow shape. Streets follow the valley floor, with the main road and the railway running beside the river, while side lanes climb short distances up the slopes on either side.
The mountains around it are forested. The Rarău massif, with its limestone crags, rises to the south, and hiking paths and hill roads lead up from town towards it. On a map this shows as a band of dense streets that thins quickly to scattered lines of farm tracks and forest roads.
