Chartres rises above the valley of the Eure, southwest of Paris, and its outline is easy to read from above. The old town sits on a small hill, crowned by Chartres Cathedral. Narrow medieval streets and stairways lead down the slope to the river. A ring of boulevards follows the line of the old fortifications, and beyond it lies the flat, open farmland of the Beauce.
