Château-Thierry sits on the Marne in the Aisne department, at the western edge of the Champagne wine region. On a map, the river curves through town. The historic centre climbs the north bank toward the castle hill, and a smaller district spreads across the flat ground on the south side. Bridges link the two banks, and vineyards and fields cover the slopes beyond.
The town is the birthplace of Jean de La Fontaine, the seventeenth-century author of the famous fables. His family house is now a museum. It is also closely linked to the First World War. American troops fought nearby in 1918, and a large monument on Hill 204 above the town commemorates their role. The ruins of the medieval castle still crown the hill.
