Chatou lies west of Paris in the Yvelines department, on the inside of one of the Seine's great meanders. From above, the town sits on a gently curving riverbank. Residential streets run back from the water toward the neighbouring communes, and the RER A line crosses the town on its way between La Défense and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
In the river lies the long, narrow Île des Impressionnistes, linked to the banks by bridges. In the late nineteenth century, painters came here to spend time at riverside restaurants. The Maison Fournaise, where Renoir painted Luncheon of the Boating Party, still stands on the island, and the area remains closely tied to the history of Impressionism.
