Chimbas lies directly north of the city of San Juan and forms part of the same urban area, so on a map its streets continue the regular grid of the provincial capital with barely a visible seam. Blocks are laid out in straight rows, interrupted only by wider avenues that carry traffic in and out of the centre and by the occasional open square.
Further out, the pattern loosens. Houses give way to rectangular fields and vineyards, their edges set by the irrigation channels that make farming possible in a valley where almost every green surface depends on water brought in from elsewhere. The San Juan River runs along the northern side of the department, and past the cultivated land the terrain turns bare and open.
