Congonhas lies in the iron-ore country of Minas Gerais, and its map reflects the terrain. Streets rarely run straight; they follow ridges and valleys, bending around slopes and climbing toward the older part of town. The result is an organic, branching pattern that contrasts sharply with the planned grids found in many Brazilian cities.
The town is best known for the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its churchyard holds twelve soapstone prophets carved by Aleijadinho, and the chapels on the slope below contain his figures of the Passion, among the most important works of Brazilian baroque art.
