Côte-Saint-Luc is an independent city on the island of Montreal, surrounded by the boroughs and municipalities of the larger metropolis. Above all, its map is shaped by the Canadian Pacific rail yard that runs through it. This wide band of parallel tracks separates the southern part of the city from the northern neighbourhoods, which can be reached by only a few crossings.
Around the yard, the street pattern is almost entirely residential: curving crescents, cul-de-sacs, low-rise houses and clusters of apartment towers along the main boulevards. Parks, schools and community buildings are spread through the neighbourhoods. The city is known for its large Jewish community and its strong civic identity. It regained its independence from Montreal after a brief merger in the early 2000s.
