Dali stretches along the western shore of Erhai Lake in western Yunnan, pressed between the water and the Cang Mountains. This gives it an unusually clear shape on a map. A narrow band of towns, villages and fields runs north to south, with the lake on one side and steep, empty slopes on the other. The modern city centre, Xiaguan, sits at the southern tip of the lake.
About a dozen kilometres to the north lies the old town of Dali, once the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. Its walls enclose a near-square grid of stone-paved streets. Just outside stand the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, among the best-known landmarks in southwestern China. The area is home to the Bai people, known for their whitewashed houses and marble craft.

Dali Old Town sits within its restored walls as a near-square grid of narrow streets and gates. It is one of the easiest historic plans in Yunnan to read on a map.
Cang Mountain slopes
The Cang Mountains rise steeply west of the lake. The street network stops abruptly at their foot and leaves a band of blank terrain along the western edge of the map.
