Deventer Map Poster
Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, set on the east bank of the IJssel in Overijssel. In the Middle Ages it was a prosperous Hanseatic trading town, and its historic centre is still largely intact. On the map, the old town forms a dense, rounded shape pressed against the river, with open floodplain on the far bank.
Inside the centre, narrow streets wind between the Brink, the main square, and the Bergkwartier, a hilly quarter around the Bergkerk. The Lebuinuskerk rises near the river. Deventer is also known for its spiced cake, Deventer koek, and for a Dickens festival in December, when the old streets fill with costumed characters.
