Devonport sits at the mouth of the Mersey River on Tasmania's north-west coast. From above, the river divides the town in two: the main centre on the western bank and East Devonport on the other side. Both face a sheltered estuary that opens onto Bass Strait. The coastline, the river and the harbour basins give the map clear, strong outlines.
The town is best known as the Tasmanian terminal of the Spirit of Tasmania ferries from the mainland, so for many visitors the island starts here. The ferry berths and port areas show up on the map as hard-edged forms along the river. Upstream, the residential streets spread out in loose grids.
