Dieppe is on the Normandy coast, where the valley of the Arques reaches the English Channel between high chalk cliffs. On a map, the harbour basins extend inland through the town. The old streets group tightly between the harbour and the beach, and a long, straight seafront runs along the pebble shore. Behind it is a wide strip of lawn.
The town has been a port for centuries, and ferries still connect it with Newhaven on the English coast. A castle stands on the western cliff above the beach. Dieppe is also remembered for the 1942 Allied raid, which involved mainly Canadian troops and is commemorated along the shore today.
