Dinslaken lies just north of Duisburg, at the point where the Ruhr's industrial landscape begins to open toward the lower Rhine plain. On a map, the Rhine runs along the western side, bordered by meadows and flood land, while the town itself spreads eastward in a mix of older streets and later housing.
The historic centre is compact, with streets gathered around a small core and the site of the town's medieval castle. Around it, the twentieth century left larger patterns: railway lines, industrial sites and the grounds of the former Lohberg colliery, whose layout still shapes the northern part of the town.
