Echizen Map Poster
Echizen was created in 2005 when the city of Takefu merged with the town of Imadate. It sits in the centre of Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. The main urban area, the former Takefu, lies on a flat plain near the Hino River, with the Hokuriku rail corridor running through it and hills rising on either side.
The city is known across Japan for its crafts. Echizen washi, a traditional handmade paper, has been produced for centuries in the Imadate area, and Takefu is famous for Echizen uchihamono, its hand-forged knives. On the map, the older centre forms a compact tangle of streets around temples and shrines, while newer development follows the main roads and the rail line.
