Écully lies just west of Lyon, on the hills above the Saône. The terrain is rolling and green, and from above the town looks less like a dense grid and more like a network of curving roads threading between gardens, parkland and residential streets. Main roads and motorways towards Lyon cut along its edges.
The town is known in France for its higher education institutions. The École Centrale de Lyon has its campus here, as does emlyon business school, and the Institut Paul Bocuse, a culinary school, occupies a château in the town. These campuses appear on the map as large open spaces with their own internal paths.
