Edmonton is in the London Borough of Enfield, in the north of the capital. On the map it is a dense grid of terraced streets. The old Roman line of Hertford Road and the A10 run north through it, and the North Circular crosses east to west along its southern side. Edmonton Green sits near the middle as its commercial heart.
The eastern edge is made of water. The Lea Valley holds a chain of large reservoirs and the River Lee Navigation, which form broad, geometric shapes that contrast sharply with the fine residential grain to the west. Pymmes Park and other green spaces break up the streets in between.
The area has literary connections. John Keats served an apprenticeship to a surgeon here as a young man, and the essayist Charles Lamb spent his last years in Edmonton and is buried in the churchyard of All Saints.
