Embu lies on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya, the country's highest mountain. From above, the town is shaped by the landscape: roads follow the ridges, rivers and streams cut valleys between them, and the built-up area spreads along the main road as it climbs toward the mountain. Around it, small farms and fields cover the hillsides.
The town is the headquarters of Embu County and a commercial centre for the surrounding farming area. The fertile volcanic soils and highland rainfall support crops such as coffee, tea and a wide range of food crops. The forests of Mount Kenya lie above the town, and on clear days the peaks can be seen to the north.
