River Fergus
The river curls through the town centre and on toward the Shannon estuary. It forms the natural spine around which the oldest streets and bridges were built.

Ennis Map Poster & Print
Ennis grew up on the banks of the River Fergus, and from above the river still shapes its heart. The old town is a tight pattern of narrow, curving streets that meet at small squares and converge near the water, with laneways and back passages cutting between them. The street plan has kept its medieval outline even as the town has grown around it.
Beyond the centre, residential estates, schools and business parks spread out in looser curves, and a motorway bypass adds one long, smooth line near the edge of the frame. Past that lie the fields and hedgerows of the Clare countryside. An Ennis map poster places that compact core in the middle of this wider, softer setting.
The town takes its name from the Irish word for island. It is best known for Ennis Friary, a thirteenth-century Franciscan foundation whose ruins stand near the river. A tall monument to Daniel O'Connell rises in the square named after him and recalls his election as Member of Parliament for Clare in 1828. Ennis is also closely associated with traditional Irish music.

Medieval street plan
Narrow streets, lanes and small squares form a dense, irregular web in the centre, in striking contrast with the broader layouts of the later suburbs around it.
O'Connell Square
Where several main streets meet, the square is marked by the column honouring Daniel O'Connell. It is a natural focal point both on the map and in the town.
