Épernay lies on the left bank of the Marne, where the valley opens between the vine-covered slopes of the Montagne de Reims to the north and the Côte des Blancs to the south. The town fills the valley floor and climbs the gentle hillsides. From above, its centre is a tight tangle of older streets pulled toward the river crossing.
The town is synonymous with Champagne. Grand houses, Moët & Chandon among them, line the straight, stately Avenue de Champagne, and beneath them run cellars cut into the chalk for many kilometres. In 2015 the avenue and its cellars were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars.

The river and the canal beside it run in parallel across the north of the town. The pair of smooth curves separates Épernay from the vineyard villages on the opposite slopes.
