Épinal lies on the Moselle in the foothills of the Vosges, and the river is the heart of its map. Through the town centre the Moselle divides into separate channels, creating an island of streets and bridges between them. Around this core, wooded slopes rise quickly, so the built-up area stretches along the valley rather than spreading outward in every direction.
The town is the capital of the Vosges department and is known across France for the images d'Épinal, the brightly coloured popular prints produced here since the late eighteenth century. The Imagerie d'Épinal still operates, and the phrase itself has entered French as a term for a simplified, idealised picture. The Basilica of Saint-Maurice stands in the old town.
