Esch-sur-Alzette is the second-largest city in Luxembourg, lying in the south of the country directly on the border with France. Its map shows a dense, fairly regular urban centre, a long main shopping street, and large areas shaped by industry: rail lines, former mining land and the redeveloped steel site of Belval to the west. Wooded hills rise to the south, where the border runs.
The city grew rapidly with iron mining and steelmaking from the late nineteenth century, and that heritage is still visible at Belval, where preserved blast furnaces stand beside the modern campus of the University of Luxembourg. In 2022 Esch-sur-Alzette was a European Capital of Culture.
