Esna sits on the west bank of the Nile, about fifty kilometres south of Luxor, where the valley narrows between two bands of desert. On a map the town is a dense, low grid pressed against the water, with most of its streets running parallel to the bank. Beyond the last houses, irrigated fields make a thin green strip before the desert begins, and that contrast reads clearly even in black and white.
The best-known landmark is the Temple of Khnum, built in the Greco-Roman period. It now lies several metres below the modern streets, because the town grew up on top of it over the centuries. Excavated as a rectangular pit in the middle of the old quarter, it shows on the map as a sharp void among tightly packed blocks. Its painted ceilings have been cleaned and restored in recent years.
Near the town, a barrage crosses the Nile, and river cruise boats travelling between Luxor and Aswan pass through its lock.
