Long Island Expressway
The expressway runs straight across the hamlet from west to east. It divides the map in two and gives the composition its strongest line.

Mapa
Farmingville Map Poster & Print
Farmingville is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, in the middle of Suffolk County on Long Island. It sits roughly halfway between the North and South Shores. That position shows on the map: there is no coastline, only a steady spread of suburban streets with the Long Island Expressway running across them from west to east.
Most of the hamlet grew after the Second World War, when former farmland and pine barrens edge were divided into housing developments. The result is typical of postwar Long Island. Looping residential streets, dead ends and cul-de-sacs sit between a few straighter main roads, with patches of woodland and parkland left in between.
A Farmingville map poster shows this suburban pattern very clearly. The expressway is a bold straight line, and the curling streets on either side look almost like fingerprints. It is an unusually graphic map for a place many people pass through without stopping.

Cul-de-sac pattern
Postwar developments produced loops, crescents and dead-end streets. On the poster they form tight, looping clusters that are satisfying to trace.
Wooded pockets
Areas of woodland and parkland remain between the neighbourhoods. They leave irregular pale shapes that break up the dense suburban texture.
