Scattered homesteads
Buildings sit across the hills in small groups instead of lining streets. This gives the map an evenly speckled surface that looks almost like woven fabric.

Mapa
Frischgewaagd Map Poster & Print
Frischgewaagd lies in the hill country of northern KwaZulu-Natal, a landscape of broad slopes, grassland and small streams. It has no single centre the way a town does. Instead it is a settled area where homesteads are scattered across the terrain, linked by a loose network of roads and footpaths. That pattern gives the map a very different texture from a planned town.
From above, the main roads form the structure. They follow ridgelines and valley bottoms where the ground allows, and smaller tracks branch off toward individual clusters of houses. The density changes gradually and never stops at a clear edge, so the settlement seems to fade into the countryside around it. Watercourses cut shallow lines through the land and shape where people have built.
A Frischgewaagd map poster shows a place defined by its landscape, not its monuments, and that is part of its appeal. The fine lines of rural roads spread across a wide frame make an abstract, quite delicate print. For people with family roots in the area, it records the geography of a community that most maps show only in passing.

Ridge and valley roads
The main roads follow the natural lines of the terrain, bending along slopes and crossing streams. They set the overall direction of the composition.
Open grassland
Between the settled clusters are wide areas without roads. In a minimalist print they become calm empty space that lets the network of tracks stand out.
