Garba Tula lies east of Isiolo in the semi-arid country of northern Kenya. On a map it is a small cluster of streets surrounded by a great deal of open space: scrubland, grazing land and dry riverbeds that carry water only after rain. It is the administrative centre of its sub-county, and most of the layout sits along the main road and around the market.
The surrounding area is pastoralist land, home mostly to Borana communities who herd cattle, camels and goats across the rangelands. Water shapes life here more than anything else, and the courses of seasonal streams and the locations of wells matter as much as any road. Community conservancies in the wider county also place the area within Kenya's northern wildlife landscape.
