Garça is a town in the interior of São Paulo state, in the rolling country of the western plateau. Seen from above, the centre is a regular grid of blocks typical of towns founded in the region during the expansion of coffee farming in the early twentieth century, with straight streets running out to meet highways and the patchwork of fields beyond.
The name means heron in Portuguese, a light and unusual touch for a map title. Around the urban area the landscape is agricultural, with small streams cutting shallow valleys and rural roads dividing the land into long parcels. Marília, the nearest large city, lies a short distance to the west along the routes that link the interior.
